Miss Jeaneen

"When we can't fit a square peg into a round hole, we'll usually blame the peg - when sometimes it's the rigidity of our thinking that accounts for our failure to accommodate it." - Nate Silver

Orton Gillingham Tutoring

Square Peg Literacy offers OG tutoring to children ages 6-12. Using an explicit, systematic approach in an individualized setting, Square Peg helps students to increase their literacy skills while building confidence and self esteem.

Literacy Advocate and Consultant

Getting emails and phone calls requesting support is a weekly and sometimes daily occurrence at Square Peg Literacy. While Miss Jeaneen is currently full in her tutoring practice, she is able to offer support for families attempting to navigate the school system and get help for their children. A phone call or google meet appointment can be arranged. Talking about children, literacy, dyslexia, how to teach reading, and the science of reading are passionate topics and she is excited to now offer guidance and information to families as a consultant. Contact information can be found below.

Step 1: Diagnostic Assessment

Doing an initial assessment will provide the information necessary to help individualize instruction. During this primary assessment, students are assessed on phonological awareness, alphabetic automaticity, the reading and spelling of:

  • the most common graphemes

  • phonetically regular words - real and nonsense

  • irregular words - real and nonsense

  • Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) passages

  • Reading comprehension

Careful attention is paid to the social emotional impact of literacy struggles and how the brain works. It is important for students and families to understand the Orton Gillingham method and why THIS TIME WILL BE DIFFERENT!

Step 2: OG Therapy Plan/Meeting

After completing the diagnostic assessment, each child's skills will be measured against the scope and sequence, so that gaps can be identified and a learning plan can be created.

Session Information:

  • Sessions are 55 minutes

  • Recommended* – 3 x 55 minute sessions per week

  • * Students must commit to at least 2 sessions a week to experience progress.

  • One session a week is not recommended and I have found that it slows down progress dramatically.

  • Sessions are individualized and progress at the pace of the student. The more review is done at home, the faster the student progresses. Most students need 2 years of intense tutoring and review to get to grade level, although reading may be quicker than spelling and writing.

  • Parents are welcome to stay for sessions and learn along with their child. (Parent information seminars will also be offered starting in fall 2025.)

  • All sessions are in person!

Step 3: Registration

Term Registration:

· January -March

· April - June

· July and August Summer Programs not offered in 2025

· September—December

Winter Term 2025 is full. Priority is given to students in general education settings that are not getting structured literacy support in school. Families committed to review and support their child's journey are encouraged to apply.

I can still help you on your journey with advocacy or advice. My hope is to provide parents with information to help them with knowledge of dyslexia, best practice, the science of reading, and most fun of all...the rules of English so you know what your child is talking about.

NEW Coming in Fall 2025-Group sessions

Group sessions will be 2 times a week. I will be looking at a Grade 1-2 group and a grade 3-4 group at the beginning level. Depending on interest, I may also have a grade 3-6 intermediate group that would be working more on advanced vowel teams, morphology and writing skills.

NEW Coming in Fall 2025-Parent foundational classes

I will also be offering half day parent seminars to teach parents the foundational rules of English, so that they might best support their child. These would take place 1 Sunday a month, with a different focus each month.

If you are interested in either option, please fill out the contact info with specifics below. As there is no summer session 2025, I will be setting my fall schedule in April 2025.

Payment Options and Progress Summary

  • Diagnostic Assessment Fee

  • One time Supply/Registration Fee

  • 5% discount is offered for full term payment upon term registration

  • Monthly e-transfers and cash accepted.

  • Receipts issued by term.

Term Progress

A brief Progress Summary will be given at the end of the term. At that time, recommendations will be given for future growth.

LIFE HAPPENS! Up to 2 sessions may be rescheduled with 24 hour notice, pending practitioner availability. Other circumstances will be considered on an individual basis.
